In 1865 French inventors Auguste Denayrouze and Benoit Rouquayrol were the original inventors of the self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba), development of the aqualung occurred later by the pioneers Frenchmen Emil Gagnon and Jacques Cousteau. Their invention, which is now called the modern Aqua Lung, was in 1943 first used successfully . It allowed underwater divers to breathe underwater without those very large cumbersome diving suit.
Today we can enjoy the benefits of the work of those early pioneers with an impressive range of underwater diving equipment now available for our own recreation sport diving.
Recreational scuba diving was developed from related activities such as snorkeling. Recreational underwater activity was limited by the amount of breath that a diver could hold. However, the invention of the aqualung in 1943 and the wetsuit in 1953 by Georges Beuchat led to a revolution in recreational diving. However, for much of the early years, recreational scuba diving was limited to those who were able to afford their own diving gear, and undergo intensive training.
